Good morning! In today’s trending news stories;

1. Imoyo, media manager and journalist, has passed away on December 17, 2023. He served as a newspaper editor in Lagos before joining Access Bank in 2014 and was the Head of Media Relations at Access Holding until his death. The family statement, issued by Tunde Imoyo, mentioned that he died at the First Cardiology, Ikoyi, Lagos, after a brief illness.

2. The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, conferred the traditional title of ‘Gbobaniyi of Ijebuland’ on the immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai. El-Rufai, expressing his pleasure on social media, noted that he is the first Nigerian outside the South-West to receive a chieftaincy title from the Awujale in his over 60 years on the throne. The former governor, along with his ally Jimi Lawal and Lawal’s wife, was honored for contributions to the Ijebu Kingdom and Nigeria. El-Rufai expressed gratitude for the recognition and requested prayers for a successful event.

3. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, outlined solutions to address economic hardships faced by Nigerians, including providing N25,000 monthly for three months to 15 million households and implementing tax waivers. In an interview marking his Man-Of-The-Year Honour, Tinubu acknowledged the global economic challenges and emphasized his administration’s proactive measures. He mentioned tax waivers for Compressed Natural Gas and diesel purchases to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on transportation. Tinubu also highlighted efforts to support businesses, ensure staple food availability, and enhance agricultural practices for food security.

4. General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, explained why he did not oppose the new Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, who was a former RCCG pastor in the United States. Pastor Adeboye revealed that he recognized Olaoye’s destiny to be a king and, despite advising him to seek God’s confirmation, ultimately supported his decision to vie for the traditional stool. Adeboye emphasized that he couldn’t go against God’s will and, during a thanksgiving service, anointed the new king and advised him to promote peace and unity among his subjects. Oba Olaoye expressed gratitude for Adeboye’s mentorship and role as a spiritual father.

5. Reports have shown that between January and September 2023, the Federal Government allocated N375.8 billion for electricity subsidy, with consumers contributing N782.6 billion for power services. Despite distribution companies billing N1.06 trillion during this period, only N782.6 billion was collected, highlighting challenges amid widespread blackouts. The subsidy increased from N36 billion in Q1 to N204.6 billion in Q3, primarily due to non-cost reflective tariffs. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has called for transparent subsidy calculation and tariff policies to ensure fair inclusion of stakeholders in the process.

6. FIFA’s new Club World Cup, has been scheduled for the summer of 2025 with 32 teams. It will be hosted by the USA and will take place every four years. The FIFA Council confirmed the qualifying criteria, limiting each country to a maximum of two clubs. Notably, Liverpool and Manchester United won’t participate, as England’s spots go to recent Champions League winners Chelsea and Manchester City. The tournament’s structure includes 12 European teams, determined by Champions League performances from 2020-21 to the current season. Despite concerns raised by football stakeholders about player workload and welfare, the tournament is set to proceed.
7. Nigerian actor Emeka Ike revealed in a Channels Television interview on “Rubbin’ Minds” that he has been experiencing depression due to long-standing marital issues. The actor, aged 56, expressed concern about what he perceives as an increase in the abuse of men by women, stating that most women don’t express love but rather engage in abusive behavior.
