The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre following the shocking death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, after a pair of surgical scissors was left in her stomach. Umar passed away on January 11, 2026, months after undergoing a medical procedure in September 2025.
She reportedly began experiencing severe discomfort post-surgery. A series of tests later revealed the surgical instrument still lodged inside her body.
The case gained national attention after Umar’s family shared her ordeal online, sparking widespread public outrage and calls for the responsible doctor to face government sanctions.
In response, the Hospital Management Board, through its Public Relations Officer Samira Suleiman, confirmed that a preliminary investigation ordered by Executive Secretary Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda verified the negligence The News Chronicle gathered.
“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss.
We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.
The board announced the immediate suspension of the three personnel involved and referred the matter to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary action in line with professional standards and the law.
