Today’s “sinners” as tomorrow’s “heroes”

—

This isn’t the best time for a reasonable discussion on Nigerian politics. However, I’ve been saying lately that “today’s sinners are tomorrow’s heroes,” and it seems many people aren’t quite getting it 😊. Let me explain.

Holding political office in Nigeria is like a golden ticket to higher positions. It’s an unwritten rule that makes people feel entitled to more. The thing is, being in office, especially with a political appointment, is a major form of empowerment.

We’re angry with governors, senators, and lawmakers right now, but we’ve created a system where having that experience is almost a prerequisite for contesting elections or being relevant in politics. Politicians don’t usually approach professionals or professors to run for office; they go for those with deep pockets.

The point is, in our regional struggles for power or aspirations for fair share among the ethnic nationalities, the politicians we criticize today become our last resort tomorrow. That’s why Atiku, Kwankwaso, Obi, Amaechi, and others are still relevant. Because, they have the experience and resources.

Take Tinubu, for example. He was seen as a top contender when the southwest felt it was their turn, thereby shutting the door on Prof Yemi Osinbajo who is more younger, vibrant and modest.

If yesterday’s “villains” aren’t today’s heroes, why are we just noticing Atiku now? It means that today’s “sinners” might be tomorrow’s heroes, depending on the narrative we create.

Now, with people like Dino Melaye, Saraki, and Yahaya Bello having redeemed from the political “sabbatical leave”, the new “saints” will likely come from them with the right experience, resources, and emotional appeal, because, let’s face it, our memories are short and emotions are fleeting.
