Tinubu to Amend NIMC Act, Mandates NIN Registration for All Residents to Ensure Taxation

President Bola Tinubu is set to introduce an executive bill to the National Assembly aimed at amending the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act.

This bill mandates that all residents of Nigeria, including foreigners, must register for a National Identity Number (NIN) to ensure proper taxation.

The initiative forms part of a broader set of economic stabilization measures approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development during a briefing.

He was joined by Senior Special Assistant on Digital Strategy, O’tega Ogra. In total, around 20 bills are being proposed, including amendments to the Nigerian Port Authority and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Acts, to ensure transactions are conducted in Naira, promoting the national currency and reducing dollar dependence.

Additionally, one of the bills aims to amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Act, redirecting 30% of its income towards the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
