President Bola Tinubu has stepped in once more to quell the escalating feud between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged godfather and predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The bitter political tussle reignited in January after Wike-loyal lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly launched impeachment proceedings against Fubara, accusing him of misconduct, including unbudgeted spending from state funds.
This is not the first time Tinubu has intervened. In December 2023, he brokered a fragile peace between Fubara and Wike, which quickly collapsed, culminating in the declaration of a six-month emergency rule in the state on March 18, 2025, and the temporary suspension of the governor.
In the latest move, ahead of his official trip to Türkiye on January 26, Tinubu ordered an immediate suspension of all impeachment efforts against Fubara—though under strict conditions.
Sources say the President issued clear political terms aimed at restoring stability between the two key players in Rivers, a state critical to his 2027 re-election strategy.
Tinubu reportedly sent a blunt message to Fubara: Wike remains the undisputed political leader in Rivers, whether in APC or PDP, and must be respected.
At the same time, the President warned Wike to step back from any impeachment plots and allow governance to proceed, cautioning that continued hostilities could destabilize the state, something Tinubu said he would not tolerate.
