Tinubu Approves Salary Increase, Welfare Package for Soldiers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an increase in salaries and allowances for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of troops battling insecurity across the country.

The development emerged during an interfaith Ramadan fast-breaking event held at the Presidential Villa on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The gathering brought together Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Minister of Defence, service chiefs, military personnel, paramilitary leaders and other top government officials.

Speaking at the event, a senior military officer expressed gratitude to the President for approving improved pay and welfare packages for service members.

According to him, the new measures alongside approvals for the procurement of equipment and improved housing would significantly boost morale and enhance operational effectiveness among troops.

Responding, President Tinubu thanked attendees for participating in the interfaith breaking of fast, describing the Ramadan period as a time for reflection, unity and appreciation of Nigeria’s diversity.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces who risk their lives daily while staying away from their families to confront threats such as terrorism and banditry.

“The nation is grateful for your courage and sacrifice,” the President said, assuring the troops that their efforts would not be in vain. He added that the government would continue to support them and expand opportunities for their families.

Tinubu also admitted that challenges remain, particularly in areas such as accommodation and welfare, but stressed that collective effort and cooperation would help overcome them.

On the economy, the President acknowledged that the administration faced a difficult start but insisted that stability had now been achieved, noting that the sacrifices of both citizens and the military were beginning to yield results.

He further expressed sympathy for victims of recent security incidents and urged Nigerians to uphold values of love, commitment and unity in confronting terrorism and banditry.

The pay rise forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen troop morale and improve the operational capacity of the armed forces amid Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
