The Ogun State Police Command has concluded plans to arrest and prosecute a TikTok user, identified as Mirabel, after she allegedly admitted that her earlier rape allegation was false.
Mirabel had claimed in videos posted on TikTok that she was attacked and raped by a stranger who forced entry into her apartment in Ogijo, Ogun State. The allegation, which circulated widely online, prompted public calls for the suspect’s identification and arrest.
According to police authorities, Mirabel reported the incident at the Ibafo Police Division on February 17. She was subsequently taken to a medical facility for examination due to what officers described as her unstable condition. Police later confirmed she was admitted to an intensive care unit for further treatment.
In an audio recording shared online by social media personality VeryDarkMan, Mirabel was heard admitting that aspects of her allegation were untrue. During the recorded conversation, she said, “Yes, sir, please help me, I am very sorry,” after being confronted with messages she had earlier attributed to her alleged attacker.
She also acknowledged that she had created a threatening TikTok account herself to strengthen her claim.
Mirabel further stated in the recording, “I have been taking drugs, and I was not thinking clearly when I posted the videos.”
A senior police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said officers were at the hospital where Mirabel is receiving treatment. The source stated that once she is discharged, she will be taken into custody and charged in court if investigations confirm that she provided false information. The source added that such action would serve as a deterrent.
However, the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Mirabel was not arrested but is being treated as a complainant while investigations continue. “She was not arrested by the police. She reported a case, and we are investigating. Nothing like her arrest happened,” he said.
Babaseyi explained that if the allegation is established to be true, the perpetrator would be arrested and prosecuted. “Otherwise, the law also addresses giving false information,” he stated, adding that the command will rely on evidence before reaching a conclusion.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola earlier confirmed that the Commissioner of Police directed the Divisional Police Officer in Ibafo to immediately contact Mirabel after her report surfaced online. She said preliminary findings indicated that the alleged incident occurred within the Ogijo jurisdiction, and the case was documented at the appropriate division.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency also confirmed it made contact with a close associate of Mirabel but clarified that the incident occurred in Ogun State and falls outside its jurisdiction.
The police have urged members of the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed. Further updates are expected upon the conclusion of medical treatment and review of evidence.
