Suspected Lakurawa bandits have reportedly killed 34 people in coordinated attacks on communities in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attacks, according to reports obtained by The News Chronicle, occurred in Kangiwa town on Thursday evening, following an earlier assault on Wednesday that targeted several villages in the area.
The incidents have left families devastated and forced many residents to flee their homes for safety.
Sources said the gunmen moved from one settlement to another, opening fire on civilians in what residents described as one of the deadliest single-day attacks recorded in the area in recent months.
The worst hit community was Mamunu, where 16 people were reportedly killed. Awashaka recorded five youths killed, while Masama lost three residents. Two people each were said to have been killed in Gorin Dena, Kamzo, Dan Mai Rago, Tungar Bature and Tungar Tsoho communities.
By nightfall, fear had reportedly gripped communities across the Kangiwa axis amid concerns of further attacks.
The incident underscores the worsening security situation in Kebbi North Senatorial District, with affected communities calling on both the state government and local authorities to take urgent action.
Residents have expressed frustration over what they described as an inadequate security response and are urging the Kebbi State Government and the Arewa Local Government Council to implement stronger measures to prevent further loss of life.
