TikTok Sacks Workers Amid AI Moderation Shift

—

TikTok, the social media platform owned by ByteDance, has dismissed hundreds of employees as it advances its use of artificial intelligence for content moderation.
The layoffs primarily affected staff in Malaysia, with the company confirming that fewer than 500 workers were impacted.
This change reflects TikTok’s broader initiative to reshape its global operations in content monitoring.
The platform has faced ongoing challenges in managing the vast amount of content shared daily.
By integrating AI technology, TikTok aims to streamline its moderation processes and improve efficiency.
While AI will take on more responsibilities, the company will continue to employ human moderators to address content that requires a nuanced, human touch.
This dual approach is expected to enhance TikTok’s ability to swiftly identify and manage harmful or inappropriate material.
This round of layoffs follows several reductions earlier this year.
In January, TikTok let go of 60 employees working in its sales and advertising teams.
In April, it cut over 250 jobs in Ireland, focusing on administrative roles. Another wave in May saw approximately 1,000 employees affected in marketing and operations globally.
The company’s restructuring efforts signal an ongoing shift towards automation and a leaner operational model.
TikTok has yet to provide further details on how these changes might affect the platform’s overall performance or whether it plans additional layoffs in other regions.
