The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has raised an urgent call for an investigation into the tragic killing of one of its supporters, Sunusi Yahuza Mohammed, during the local government elections held on Wednesday in Mangu Local Government Area.
The incident took place in Ward One of Mangu, where Sunusi Yahuza Mohammed reportedly lost his life while trying to protect a ballot box from being stolen. Another individual was also shot in the process, further escalating tensions in the area.
In a statement on Friday issued by the APC’s acting publicity secretary, Mr. Shittu Bamaiyi, the party expressed shock and deep concern over the brazen violence that marred the election process.
The statement condemned the act, emphasizing that the loss of life, particularly in such a brutal manner, should never be the price for participating in a democratic exercise.
Bamaiyi noted that Sunusi Yahuza Mohammed was simply exercising his civic duty by defending the integrity of the voting process when he was killed.
The party expressed dismay that political actors, driven by the desire to win at all costs, would resort to such extreme measures, putting innocent lives at risk.
“The incident at Mangu Ward One is utterly unacceptable, and the APC cannot sit idly by while its supporters are being harassed, intimidated, or even killed,” the statement read. “No matter the status of the individuals involved, justice must prevail.”
The party further called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the killing of Mohammed.
It urged security agencies and relevant authorities to take swift action in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
The APC vowed to ensure that those responsible for the tragic death of Sunusi Yahuza Mohammed face the full force of the law.
The party also extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging the deep pain and loss they must be feeling.
The APC urged the residents of Mangu to remain calm in the face of this tragedy, assuring them that every effort is being made to bring those behind the violence to justice.
