In Meta’s latest earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads, the social network’s rival to Twitter and X, has reached a milestone of over 150 million monthly active users.
This marks a significant increase from the 130 million reported just two months ago.
One notable development for Threads is its integration with ActivityPub, a decentralized protocol powering networks like Mastodon.
Users in the U.S. over 18 can now connect their accounts to the Fediverse, broadening Threads’ reach across decentralized platforms.
Meta plans to further expand Threads’ ecosystem by releasing its API to developers by June, potentially opening avenues for innovative experiences around the social network.
However, it remains uncertain if third-party clients will be permitted.
Despite Meta’s recent rollout of an AI chatbot across its other platforms, Threads was excluded, possibly due to its lack of native direct messaging functionality.
Nevertheless, Threads introduced a new test feature allowing users to auto-archive their posts and manage their content more efficiently.
While not positioning itself as a news amplification platform, Threads continues to gain traction, with recent reports indicating that it now boasts more daily active users in the U.S. than X, according to app analytics firm Apptopia.
As Threads celebrates its nine-month milestone, Meta continues to strengthen its position in the social media landscape, steadily growing its audience and expanding the platform’s capabilities.
