Nyesom Wike was born on Dec. 13, 1967, in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State.
Before rising to national prominence, he served as Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area from 1999 to 2007.
Wike served as Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi between 2007 and 2011. Their political relationship later deteriorated dramatically.
Under President Goodluck Jonathan, Wike served as Minister of State for Education before briefly becoming acting Minister of Education.
Wike served as the 16th Governor of Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, succeeding Amaechi.
His administration in Rivers was strongly associated with infrastructure projects, particularly roads and public buildings. The nickname has continued into his FCT career. President Bola Tinubu also described him as “Mr Project” in 2025.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, a position he still holds. The FCT Administration lists him as the minister from 2023 to date.
Wike has remained associated with the PDP, while serving in President Tinubu’s APC-led federal government. Tinubu specifically praised him in 2025 for supporting the administration despite belonging to another party.
Wike is widely known for his blunt and often confrontational political style, which has made him a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political debates and intra-party disputes.
