Long before becoming one of Africa’s most prominent businessmen, Elumelu began his working life as a salesman of photocopiers.
After earning his master’s degree in economics from the University of Lagos, Elumelu applied to Allstates Trust Bank even though he did not meet the stated qualification criteria. The bank’s CEO noticed his application and invited him for an interview.
Elumelu was appointed a branch manager at Allstates Trust Bank at 26, making him the youngest bank branch manager in Nigeria at the time, according to his official biography.
At 34, Elumelu became CEO of Crystal Bank, a financially troubled institution he and his colleagues acquired. He subsequently renamed it Standard Trust Bank (STB).
Elumelu and his group of young bankers earned the unusual nickname “the cowboys of banking” because of their aggressive approach to transforming the struggling Crystal Bank.
Under his leadership, Standard Trust Bank went from relative obscurity to becoming Nigeria’s fifth-largest bank within seven years.
In 2005, Elumelu led Standard Trust Bank into a merger with the much older United Bank for Africa. At the time, it was described as the largest banking merger in sub-Saharan Africa.
After years at UBA, Elumelu retired from banking in 2010 and shifted his focus to investment and philanthropy, establishing Heirs Holdings and the Tony Elumelu Foundation in the same year.
Heirs Holdings was established as Elumelu’s family-owned investment company, rather than simply another publicly traded corporation.
In 2011, Heirs Holdings acquired a controlling stake in Transcorp, Nigeria’s largest listed conglomerate.
Through Heirs Holdings and its portfolio companies, Elumelu’s interests extend across financial services, power, oil and gas, technology, healthcare, hospitality, real estate and agribusiness.
In 2020, Elumelu was included in TIME100, TIME magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
He was later recognised on TIME’s TIME100 Impact Awards list in 2022.
The Nigerian government honoured Elumelu with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2022 for his contributions to Nigeria’s economic and social development.
