These are some of the most extraordinary final-day title deciders ever witnessed.
Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool, 1989
Few title deciders can match the sheer theatre of Arsenal’s visit to Anfield on 26 May 1989. Liverpool led the First Division and had not lost at home for almost three years. Arsenal needed to win by two clear goals to take the title, with the sides level on points and goal difference.
Alan Smith put Arsenal ahead in the second half, but Liverpool remained champions as the clock approached 90 minutes. Then, in injury time, Michael Thomas ran through on goal and calmly lifted the ball past Bruce Grobbelaar. Arsenal had won 2-0 and claimed the championship on goals scored. Only 39 seconds remained after Thomas’s decisive strike.
Blackburn Rovers, 1995
Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers arrived at Anfield on the final day with a two-point advantage over Manchester United. Victory would make them champions, but defeat opened the door for Ferguson’s side.
Blackburn led Liverpool 1 0 before Jamie Redknapp equalised with a 90th-minute free-kick. Liverpool then completed the comeback, winning 2-1. At Upton Park, however, United could only draw 1-1 with West Ham. Blackburn had lost their final game yet still finished champions, ending an 81-year wait for the title.
Bayern, 2001
The 2000-01 Bundesliga finale produced perhaps the ultimate example of a title being won in the last kick. Bayern Munich were three points ahead of Schalke but needed at least a draw at Hamburg. Schalke, meanwhile, beat Unterhaching 5-3 and waited.
When Sergej Barbarez put Hamburg ahead in the 90th minute, Schalke believed they had finally become champions. Their celebrations were premature. In the fourth minute of added time, Bayern won an indirect free-kick following a back-pass. Stefan Effenberg tapped it to Patrik Andersson, who fired home. Bayern had salvaged the point they needed and retained the title.
Real Sociedad, 1981
Real Sociedad needed only a draw against Sporting Gijón on 26 April 1981 to win their first Spanish league title. They led early, but Sporting turned the game around and went 2-1 ahead. With Real Madrid winning elsewhere, Sociedad’s title appeared to be slipping away.
Then came Jesús María Zamora. In the final minute, he pounced on a loose ball inside the area and equalised, securing the point that made Real Sociedad champions for the first time.
Manchester City 3-2 QPR, 2012
Nothing has surpassed the emotional chaos of 13 May 2012. Manchester City began the day level on points with Manchester United but ahead on goal difference. United won 1-0 at Sunderland, meaning City had to beat QPR.
City led through Pablo Zabaleta, then conceded twice to fall 2-1 behind. Edin Džeko equalised in the 92nd minute, but the title still appeared to be slipping away.
Then came the defining moment. In the fourth minute of added time, Sergio Agüero collected Mario Balotelli’s pass, took a touch and fired beyond Paddy Kenny. The goal came with only seconds remaining and delivered City their first league title since 1968.
Manchester City, 1968
City’s 1967-68 title was another extraordinary final-day story. Manchester United and City went into the final round knowing the championship was still alive. City needed to match United’s result.
At St James’ Park, City beat Newcastle United 4-3, having led from the 48th minute. United, meanwhile, lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland. The results turned the title race on its head and handed City the championship.
Manchester City 3-2 Aston Villa, 2022
A decade after Agüero’s miracle, City produced another astonishing final-day escape. Liverpool had kept the pressure on throughout the campaign, but City entered the final day with a two-point advantage.
Villa stunned the Etihad by taking a 2-0 lead. City appeared destined to surrender the title before İlkay Gündoğan began a remarkable three-minute turnaround. He scored in the 76th minute, Rodri equalised two minutes later and Gündoğan struck again in the 81st.
Liverpool won their own match, but it no longer mattered. City had recovered from the brink and retained the title in another extraordinary final-day finish.
