Kano Censorship Board Sanctions Back to Back for Alleged Offensive Adverts

The Kano State Censorship Board has shut down Kausar Unique Empire Ltd., popularly known as “Back to Back,” over alleged indecent advertisements circulated on social media.

The board said the enforcement action followed intelligence reports and complaints from residents, who described the shop’s promotional content as inappropriate and offensive.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano by the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani-Sulaiman.

According to Sani-Sulaiman, the shop violated the state’s advertising regulations by using indecent language and explicit illustrations in promotional materials shared across social media platforms.

He said the advertisements contravened Kano State’s cultural values, moral standards and guidelines governing commercial advertising.

The advertisements violated the cultural values, moral standards and established regulations guiding commercial promotions in the state,” he said.

Sani-Sulaiman explained that the board acted after receiving numerous complaints from concerned residents over the nature of the advertisements and their potential impact on public morality.

He warned business owners against using digital platforms to circulate offensive, immoral or objectionable content.

“We will not tolerate the circulation of materials that offend public decency or undermine the moral fabric of society,” he said.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the board’s commitment to sanitising public spaces and online platforms through sustained monitoring and enforcement.

He also urged traditional medicine vendors and other business operators to conduct their promotional activities in line with the law and accepted societal values.

Sani-Sulaiman noted that the board had taken similar enforcement actions against other businesses in recent months as part of efforts to promote responsible advertising and ensure compliance with established regulations.

He added that the board would continue working with relevant stakeholders to curb unethical promotional practices and safeguard public morality across the state.
