Teacher Faces Legal Action for Physical Assault on Female Student

A 43-year-old teacher, known as David Yusuf, has been apprehended by the Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for physical assault inflicted on a student. The charges against him are due to allegations of physically assaulting a  female student at the Government Girls College in Kuje, FCT.

The teacher who works as a casual staff member at the college, is facing two counts for causing grievous harm without provocation and assault. The case had been originally reported at the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters and later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department in FCT for further inquiry.

According to the police prosecutor, Mr. Edwin Inegbenoise, the complainant, Henry Iortim, who resides in Union Homes Estate, Kuje, claimed that his 16-year-old daughter, a student at the college, was assaulted by the defendant on June 2. During a night study session, Yusuf had allegedly used an iron rod to physically discipline her, resulting in injuries to her palm and other parts of her body.

The charges brought against the defendant are in violation of sections 241 and 326 of the Penal Code. Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi granted the defendant bail in the amount of N2 million, with two sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The court also stipulated that the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the court’s registrar before the defendant can be released.

The case has been adjourned until November 6, when it will proceed with the presentation of witnesses by the prosecuting counsel.
