Super Eagles face Egypt in Cairo Friendly ahead of AFCON Showdown

Nigeria’s Super Eagles take on long time rivals Egypt today in Cairo in a high profile friendly that offers both teams a final opportunity to fine tune preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

With a sizeable number of players already in camp, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is expected to use the encounter to test fresh faces alongside established names.

The arrival of more regulars into camp ahead of the match could, however, influence team selection as the technical crew balances experimentation with competitiveness.

The News Chronicle understands that the fixture is viewed within the Super Eagles camp as a crucial assessment point, especially after Nigeria’s recent World Cup disappointment.

Chelle has adopted a bold approach by calling up younger players and first time internationals, signaling a shift toward rebuilding depth and competition ahead of the continental tournament.

The friendly brings together two of Africa’s most decorated national teams, with Nigeria chasing a fourth title and Egypt, seven time champions, seeking another dominant run. Several fringe players are expected to get minutes as Chelle evaluates squad options before the team’s departure to Morocco.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan is also expected to rotate his squad while relying on experienced stars to set the tone. Mohamed Salah is likely to play a central role as he continues his quest for a first AFCON title, supported by a blend of domestic and Europe based talent.

Nigeria will depart Cairo on Thursday for Fes, where the Super Eagles open their AFCON campaign against Tanzania before facing Tunisia and Uganda in Group C.
