Super Eagles Boycott Training Ahead of Crucial World Cup Play-Off Against Gabon

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has disrupted their preparations for the crucial World Cup play-off against Gabon after boycotting training over unpaid bonuses and allowances.

The standoff comes just two days before their semi-final clash in Rabat, Morocco – a must-win fixture if Nigeria hopes to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The News Chronicle gathered that the players have refused to train until the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) resolves long-standing financial issues, including unpaid bonuses dating back to 2019 and compensation for their qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Efforts by team officials and NFF representatives to reach a compromise reportedly ended without progress, heightening concerns about the squad’s focus ahead of Thursday’s match.

In a collective statement, the players confirmed the protest, citing “unresolved issues with outstanding payments” as the reason for their action.

They expressed hope that the matter would be swiftly addressed to allow them to resume training and continue their preparations for the decisive encounter against Gabon.

Nigeria’s camp has already been unsettled by several distractions. Star striker Victor Osimhen, initially left out of the squad, only rejoined the team days ago, while midfielder Alex Iwobi faced criticism online after posting a video showing the modest condition of the team’s hotel.

The player later clarified that his post had been misunderstood, urging fans to remain supportive ahead of the vital game.

Nigeria finished among the four best runners-up in the CAF qualifying round and must now navigate a tense play-off route to reach the World Cup.

They face Gabon on November 13, with the winners set to meet either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final round.

Despite the tension, head coach Eric Chelle remains optimistic, assuring fans that the team will remain united and motivated to overcome the current crisis and secure their World Cup ticket.
