NASS intends to remove tertiary institutions from IPPIS - Speaker

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, strongly criticized the frequent attacks in Plateau State, resulting in numerous casualties and displacements of people.

He expressed his dismay over the renewed violence in communities around Mangu Local Government Area.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, on Thursday, the Speaker conveyed his deep concern, stating that “enough is enough” regarding the tragic incidents in Plateau.

Disturbed by the unfolding situation, Abbas announced his intention to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and upon the House’s return from the Christmas and New Year break, he pledged that the House would take a firm stance on the matter.

Abbas disclosed plans for the House to initiate discussions and organize a security summit to address the persistent security challenges not only in the North but also in other parts of the country. These actions are scheduled to commence on January 30, 2024.

Notably, Plateau State has witnessed a series of attacks on communities since late December 2023, resulting in significant loss of life.

The most recent incidents in Mangu LGA prompted the Plateau State government to impose a 24-hour curfew in the affected area.

Expressing his sorrow for the escalating violence in Plateau, Speaker Abbas called for peace on all sides, emphasizing the need for communities to coexist harmoniously for meaningful progress.

He highlighted the importance of Nigerians being supportive of each other, urging unity amidst diversity.

Abbas expressed deep sadness, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the continuous killings in Plateau State.

It is unfortunate and disheartening that this is happening at this time when efforts are on to tackle insecurity around the country.”

He appealed to the people of Plateau State to return to the peaceful coexistence they were known for in the past, stressing the importance of appreciating differences and working together to address collective challenges instead of resorting to violence.

The Speaker also called upon various security agencies to take decisive actions to quell the unrest on the Plateau.

Additionally, he commended the Plateau State government for imposing a curfew in Mangu, acknowledging that substantial efforts are needed for lasting peace in the state.
