The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians living abroad that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to strengthen national security and make the country safer for citizens returning home.
Musa gave the assurance during an interaction with members of the Nigerian community in Angola on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Luanda.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, Musa said the government was committed to creating a secure environment that would enable Nigerians in the diaspora to visit their homeland without fear.
The meeting, attended by members of the Nigerian delegation to the AU summit, also provided an opportunity for government representatives to hear the concerns of the diaspora community and provide immediate feedback.
The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, led the Nigerian delegation to the summit.
Also present were the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa; and the Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Ambassador Maxy Ogbede.
Musa commended the Nigerian community in Angola for maintaining a cordial relationship with the diplomatic mission and reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling security threats across the country.
He said the government was strengthening the manpower and operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies to respond more effectively to emerging threats.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework,” Musa said.
He attributed some of the country’s security challenges to instability in the Sahel region, which, he said, had implications for Nigeria’s borders.
“Some of our ongoing challenges stem from regional instability in the Sahel, which trickles across our borders.

“However, comprehensive border management measures are actively being implemented to curb these incursions,” he added.
The Defence Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to integrating reliable data into national security strategies and development planning, saying efforts to restore lasting peace and stability were ongoing.
On his part, Tunji-Ojo highlighted measures introduced by the government to strengthen data protection and identity management, noting that improved collaboration among security and government agencies was producing measurable results.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated NiDCOM’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, assuring them that the commission remained open to addressing their concerns and promoting opportunities that could contribute to national development.
