Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign began on a disappointing note after the European giants were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde in their Group H opener, despite dominating large portions of the contest.
The News Chronicle reports that Spain controlled possession and created numerous scoring opportunities at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but failed to convert their chances against a resilient Cape Verde side. The result has handed Luis de la Fuente’s men an early challenge as they seek qualification to the knockout stage.
Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal started on the bench and was brought on in the last minutes as Spain sought a breakthrough. Though Cape Verde’s organized defence stayed solid to guarantee a historic point, the young winger brought speed and inventiveness to the attack.
Following the last whistle, Yamal was observed getting support from family members and close friends that came to the United States for the competition. Among them was Spanish celebrity Ines Garcia, who viewed the game from the stands dressed in a Spain shirt and just confirmed her romance with the young football player.
Veteran custodian Vozinha, whose important saves irritated the Spanish assault all during the game, anchored Cape Verde’s strong defensive showing.
With Saudi Arabia next on the docket, Spain will be anxious to rebound fast while Yamal is likely to push for a starting spot as La Roja seeks to rekindle World Cup aspirations.
