Spain Coach Defends Lamine Yamal Despite Awful 2026 World Cup Campaign

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has thrown his support behind Lamine Yamal despite the teenager’s quiet start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Though the Barcelona youngster has not yet scored, the Spanish manager thinks the winger is just a few years away from having a major impact.

With a stunning 3-nil win against Austria, Spain, who ended a 16-year wait for a men’s World Cup knockout success, strengthened their championship aspirations. Mikel Oyarzabal scored two goals in a dominating performance; Pedro Porro added the third.

The News Chronicle reports that De la Fuente brushed aside concerns about Yamal’s lack of goals, saying the young player still influences games with his imagination, dribbling prowess, and overall contribution.

The coach also commended Oyarzabal’s excellent performance and the team’s discipline, which have enabled Spain to be one of just two teams still without a goal after four games.

Spain will now meet Portugal in a much-anticipated Round of 16 match in Dallas, with Yamal set to have yet another chance to introduce himself on the biggest stage.
