South Africa Reveals Date To Begin Production Of Electric Vehicles

—

South Africa is gearing up to step into the electric vehicle (EV) realm by aiming to produce its initial EV by 2026, a move signaling a push towards a more eco-friendly economy. Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, unveiled the ambitious plans for a greener transport shift, underlining the crucial role EVs play in achieving the country’s Just Energy Transition (JET) strategy.
For this transformation to unfold, an investment totaling 128.1 billion rand ($6.84 billion) from 2023 to 2027 is projected within the transport sector. Although the initial EV production might be limited, a notable growth surge is anticipated from 2026 to 2030.
To aid this transition, the government plans to temporarily reduce import duties on batteries for local vehicles, encourage green hydrogen production, revamp network industries such as freight rail and ports, and implement energy reforms.
However, challenges loom over this path to green transportation.
The nation’s power crisis stands as a significant hurdle, potentially slowing down the transition.
Moreover, potential bans on CO2-emitting vehicles in key markets by 2035 could impact around half of South Africa’s auto production.
South Africa boasts a robust automotive industry hosting major manufacturers like Toyota, Isuzu, Volkswagen, and Mercedes.
This industry is deeply interwoven into global supply chains, exporting vehicles to over 150 countries, highlighting its significant global presence.
