Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has shut down Nkwo Nnewi Spare Parts Market for one week, following their defiance to a government order to begin opening markets on Mondays.
A press release by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor stated that Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, shut the market on behalf of the governor.
This is coming barely three weeks after Soludo visited Onitsha Main Market and also closed it for not opening on Mondays.
He stated that: “I hereby inform the general public that New Auto Spare Parts Asocciation (NASPA) Market, Nkwo Nnewi, is closed for business.
“The closure of the market followed low compliance with Mr Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s order to end Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State.
“Consequently, the market, whose date of closure is effective from midnight today, Monday, 23rd February, 2026, will reopen next Monday, 2nd March, 2026.”
He warned that traders and customers are advised to avoid the market until next Monday to avoid issues with law enforcement agents.
He added that the market may face further closure if compliance is not substantial by next Monday, when the market reopens.
Meanwhile, there is a likelihood that the State Government may blacklist, suspend or expel pupils and students who continue to observe the Monday sit-at-home, despite the order having been called off by the state government and the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Reliable sources said the government could begin the exercise by opening new attendance registers in all schools, dedicated specifically to Mondays.
Any student or pupil who fails to attend school on one or two Mondays within a month may not only face expulsion but could also be denied admission into any other school in the state.
According to the source, the drastic measure is being considered because of the nonchalance and refusal of some parents to allow their children attend school on Mondays, despite the end of the sit-at-home directive.
The source also disclosed that most examinations and other important school activities may be scheduled for Mondays as a strategic step to expose students and pupils kept away by recalcitrant parents.
Meanwhile, the state government is said to have outlawed meetings, sports and all forms of gatherings in communities on Mondays in order to restore the day as a normal working day in Anambra State.
