Sokoto Government to Investigate Allegations of Theft and Sale of UNICEF-Donated Nutrition Supplements

—

The Sokoto State Government has announced plans to investigate alarming claims made by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) regarding the theft and illicit sale of nutrition supplements that were donated to the state to address malnutrition among children, on Sunday.

The issue was first brought to light during a quarterly policy makers’ meeting in Sokoto, where UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office for Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, Michael Juma, raised concerns.

Juma, who was represented at the meeting by Abraham Mahama, disclosed that the donated nutrition supplements intended for malnourished children were being misappropriated by individuals within the system.

These individuals were accused of colluding with traders to sell vital supplements to unintended recipients for personal profit.

According to Juma, an internal investigation conducted by UNICEF revealed disturbing evidence of the theft.

In some instances, personnel responsible for distributing the supplements reportedly filled cartons with stones and other objects to cover up their illegal activities.

The discovery of such practices raised significant concerns about the integrity of the distribution system and the welfare of vulnerable children who were supposed to benefit from the donations.

Responding to the serious allegations, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Asabe Balarabe, stated that the state government had been unaware of the issue until it was brought to their attention by UNICEF.

In a phone interview with Newsmen, she emphasized that the government would not ignore the situation.

“We have just concluded a meeting, and this matter will not be left unaddressed,” Balarabe said.

She further assured that an investigation would be launched immediately to uncover the truth behind the allegations.

The state government plans to identify where the theft occurred and who was involved, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken against those responsible.

Balarabe also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to tackling malnutrition in Sokoto.

She expressed the government’s determination to ensure that all future donations reach the intended beneficiaries and that the integrity of the health system is maintained.

The Commissioner assured the public that any individuals found to have been involved in the theft would face appropriate consequences for their actions.

The investigation will likely involve various stakeholders, including local health officials, law enforcement agencies, and UNICEF, to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry into the claims.

The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited by both the public and the international community, as the stolen supplements were intended to save the lives of malnourished children in Sokoto State.
