At least seven farmers have been killed in a fresh attack on Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State.
Residents said the attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday while most villagers were asleep.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said the bodies of the victims had been recovered, while search and rescue operations were still ongoing in the area.
Tengwong noted that the attack happened despite prior security alerts warning that some communities in Jos South LGA were under threat.
“According to local sources, the tragic incident occurred despite an earlier security alert indicating that some communities in Jos South LGA had been earmarked for possible attacks,” he said.
“Sadly, Bum community has now fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence. This attack adds to the growing list of assaults on innocent rural communities in Plateau State, raising serious concerns over the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace and celebration.”
He added that the association was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace and the Plateau State Police Command, Major Samson Zhakom and SP Alabo Alfred respectively, had yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident.
