After narrowly defeating Morocco 1–0 in a thrilling final settled in extra time on Sunday night, Senegal rose as victors of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The critical moment arrived in the 94th minute at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where Pape Gueye’s goal clinched Senegal’s second AFCON title and capped a fiercely contested tournament characterised by drama and VAR arguments.
Unveiling the official awards honouring individual brilliance and team discipline over the month-long event, the Confederation of African Football drew the curtain on the competition.
The News Chronicle observed that Senegal’s achievement was mirrored in the personal honours; captain Sadio Mané was voted Player of the Tournament. Forwarding goals, leadership, and a crucial role in the final, the forward gave dominating performances throughout the tournament to earn the Golden Ball for a second time in his career.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz claimed the Golden Boot after scoring five goals – including a record run of goals in five straight games – despite falling short on home soil. Following a series of match-defining saves and four clean sheets, his teammate Yassine Bounou was named Best Goalkeeper.
Morocco also received the Fair Play Award, highlighting their sportsmanship and discipline throughout the competition, as AFCON 2025 concluded with Senegal strongly back on the continental summit.
