The Senate has strongly condemned the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as a tragic assault on the nation’s collective humanity.
The condemnation came on Tuesday as lawmakers resumed plenary after the Sallah recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio leading senators in observing a one-minute silence in honour of two teachers and a pupil killed during the attack.
Akpabio said the incident had cast a dark shadow over the country, stressing that it underscored the urgent need to strengthen security in schools and vulnerable communities.
He warned that attacks on educational institutions strike at the core of Nigeria’s future, noting that children and teachers remain the foundation of national development.
Meanwhile, tensions and protests continue to simmer in parts of Oyo, Federal Capital Territory and Plateau States over insecurity concerns, as public anger over repeated attacks persists.
