The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the security situation in Plateau State is under control following the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed deep concern over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims and the residents of the state. He said the Federal Government, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, sympathized with those affected.
According to Idris, security agencies responded swiftly after distress calls, with troops under Operation Enduring Peace deployed to the area.
He noted that the military and other security forces cordoned off affected locations, secured key routes, and launched search-and-clearance operations to track down the perpetrators.
The minister explained that the response forms part of ongoing security efforts in Plateau and the wider North-Central region, including reinforced surveillance, troop deployments, joint patrols, and intelligence-led operations to prevent further violence.
He also disclosed that President Tinubu held a high-level meeting with security chiefs to review the situation and has invited the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, for further consultations on achieving lasting peace.
Idris added that the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to stabilize the security environment and support ongoing operations, noting that authorities are working to prevent reprisals and facilitate investigations.
He stressed that the attack, though regrettable, does not represent a breakdown of national security but a criminal act within a conflict-prone area, which is being actively addressed.
The Federal Government, he said, has directed security agencies to ensure those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
The minister urged Nigerians to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid spreading unverified information that could escalate tensions.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining national unity.
