The Rwandan government has confirmed several cases of Marburg virus disease among patients, prompting immediate action from health authorities.

Marburg virus, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever closely related to Ebola, is transmitted primarily by fruit bats and through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
Symptoms of the disease typically manifest abruptly, with severe hemorrhagic signs developing within a week.
Currently, there are no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments available for the virus, which heightens the urgency of the situation.
In response to the confirmed cases, the Rwandan health ministry has launched an investigation into the source of the infection and is implementing enhanced preventive measures across health facilities.
Contact tracing efforts are underway, and individuals who have tested positive for the virus are being isolated for treatment.
Health officials revealed that the virus is transmitted through contact with the blood and bodily fluids of visibly sick individuals and is not airborne.
Those experiencing symptoms such as high fever, headaches, vomiting, muscle aches, and stomach pains are urged to contact the Rwanda Biomedical Centre or visit a health facility promptly.
The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates as necessary.
Rwanda is taking precautions similar to those seen in previous outbreaks of the Marburg virus, which occurred in Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea in 2023, and Ghana in 2022.
