Robbery suspect napped as Police tightens security in Anambra

A 29-year-old man has been arrested by the Police in Anambra for allegedly robbing a commercial tricycle operator and his passenger.

The suspect, one Christian Nwalieji of Umuawa Ifite-Ogwari in Ayamelum Council Area of Anambra State but who resides at City Supermarket Area, Okpuno, was alleged to have committed the crime on Sunday.

He and another said to be at large, had while operating on Keke tricycle, attacked one Cheta Geoffrey and his passenger, while they were returning from work with bottles and dispossessed them of their phones and cash sum of #9000.

Speaking with TNC correspondent in Awka on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, Haruna Mohammed said following the distress call, Police operatives attached to B’ division Awka in conjunction with local vigilante group arrested the suspect.

He revealed that the suspect has confessed to the crime and is assisting the police to arrest other accomplices in order to bring them to book.

“A Keke tricycle with registration number Anambra ZBL-121-VC used in committing the act was recovered as exhibit,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command says it has identified major black spots across the state where crime has returned due to the unrest that followed the ENDSARS protests and has commenced aggressive deployment of its personnel to address the situation.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed who disclosed this to our correspondent listed the black spots to include Nkpor roundabout, Upper Iweka Axis, Owerri road Onitsha, Enugu Agidi road, Nnobi junction, Ifite Okpuno and other flashpoints.

He said the deployment was following a threat analysis and intelligence gathering and the need to ensure that Ndi Anambra and other residents alike are adequately protected and secured especially during the ember periods.

“I bring Anambra people the reassurances of the State Commissioner of Police, CP John Abang, that the law enforcement agencies will continue to collaborate and ensure safety and security of all citizens before during and after the Christmas and new year celebrations,” Mohammed noted.
