Resisting Arrest May Turn Violent- Police Urge Anambra Residents to Seek Legal Redress Instead

The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned residents of the state against resisting arrest, warning that such actions can escalate into violent confrontations capable of causing injury, disability, or even loss of life to both suspects and law enforcement officers.

The warning was contained in a statement issued over the weekend by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining professionalism while urging members of the public to cooperate with security operatives at all times.

Incidents of resisting arrest across parts of the state have increased in the recent past, with citizens and law enforcement agents losing their lives in the confrontations that usually ensue.

The latest was the killing of a 23-year-old man at Mgbakwu in Awka North Council Area, accused of dealing on illicit drugs during an attempt to arrest him, with injuries to an operative of the law enforcement arm, which came for the operation.

Ikenga reiterated that the police remain “truly your friend,” noting that members of the public who require security assistance or wish to lodge complaints can reach the Command through dedicated contact lines, including 08039334002 (Police PRO), 07039194332 (Command Control Room), and 08069262121 (Complaint Response Unit).

According to the statement, arrest situations often become tense and may be misinterpreted if not handled calmly.

The Command stressed that resisting arrest, even where an individual believes the action is unjustified, is unlawful and may worsen the situation.

It advised that individuals confronted by police officers should remain calm and comply peacefully, while politely requesting to know the reason for their arrest if it is not immediately clear.

The Command also emphasized that suspects are entitled to be informed of the basis of their arrest and may request the identity and unit of the officers involved.

“The presence of a complainant assisting officers in identifying a suspect usually indicates that the Police are acting on a report, not personal interest,” the statement noted, urging citizens to avoid confrontation and instead seek legal redress through appropriate channels where necessary.

The Command further advised that suspects should cooperate fully by accompanying officers to the station, as this may demonstrate transparency and respect for constituted authority.
