Reno Omokri Reacts to ‘Dog and Fowl’ Insult from Davido

—

What began as a disagreement over the use of a global stage to expose Nigeria’s insecurity has quickly become one of the country’s most talked-about celebrity-and-political exchanges.

At the center of the controversy are Afrobeats star Davido and politician and ambassador-designate Reno Omokri.

The disagreement started during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.

During his performance, Davido wore a customized black jacket displaying the names of 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers from the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oyo State. On the back of the jacket were the words:

“Bring Them Home.”

He later shared photographs from the performance and repeated the message on social media:

“BRING THEM HOME.”

The gesture was widely seen as an attempt to draw international attention to the kidnapping crisis in Nigeria. However, Reno Omokri disagreed with Davido’s approach.

He argued that publicizing kidnappings on an international stage could benefit terrorists instead of helping victims.

Quoting former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he wrote:

“Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism.”

In a longer explanation released on 16 June 2026, Omokri said:

“While your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.”

He also compared Davido’s performance with that of American streamer IShowSpeed, who appeared at the same event wearing a Nigerian jersey and speaking positively about the country.

Omokri argued:

“IShowSpeed… used his celebrity and the global stage of the World Cup to market Nigeria by wearing a Nigerian jersey and speaking well of the same country you de-marketed.”

While discussions about the FIFA performance were still ongoing, Omokri appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday to address rumors that Mexico had rejected him as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate.

According to him, his arrival had been delayed because Mexico is busy co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, not because his appointment had been rejected.

President Bola Tinubu had appointed Omokri as a non-career ambassador in March 2026.

Davido reacted by reposting a clip of Omokri’s television interview on Instagram.

Using Nigerian slang, he wrote:

“UMU BINGO @renoomokri fowl.”

Other reports also described the post as including the words:

“dog and fowl.”

The brief message quickly spread across social media.

Rather than responding with similar insults, Omokri published an open letter addressed to Davido.

He began by saying:

“Thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response. Most shocking is your insult.”

He continued:

“You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you.”

Omokri suggested that Davido’s reaction may have been influenced by praise he received from former presidential candidate Peter Obi for speaking up about the kidnapped children.

He also cited the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel, arguing that many major Western celebrities had avoided discussing hostage situations during global sporting events because, in his view, publicity could help terrorist organizations.

He further referenced the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls abduction, claiming increased publicity complicated rescue efforts.

The exchange has since produced sharply divided reactions online.

Many users supported Davido, arguing that celebrities have a responsibility to use their platforms to draw attention to humanitarian crises. They viewed the “Bring Them Home” campaign as a way of giving a voice to families whose stories might otherwise receive little international attention.

Others agreed with Omokri’s argument that security issues should be handled carefully and that global publicity could unintentionally grow fear or give criminal groups the attention they seek.

Some commenters also criticized Davido over the personal insults.

The result has been a high-profile clash between one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars and one of its most outspoken political commentators.
