Chelsea captain Reece James and newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca have assured stability within the team when Argentina’s teammate Enzo Fernandez returns to the squad ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Recall that the Copa America winner was seen leading a discriminatory video against the French national team players, during which they chanted racial lines during their trophy parade the eve after they clinched over Colombia winning the trophy their twice on the streak.
Enzo, who is still on holiday after Argentina’s Copa America triumph, is expected to join the squad, which is currently on their pre-season tour in the USA.
Reece James said he had spoken with Enzo Fernandez and the rest of the players:
“I don’t think there’ll be problems with Enzo when he returns. There were no bad intentions, so I spoke with Enzo and the other players… for sure, it’s all clear now.”
“It’s all clarified by the player and the club; they both released a statement… there are no bad guys here.”
“Enzo has apologised, so there’s no problem at all.”
The Chelsea manager also said he had a few words with Enzo and that the issue would be discussed when he returns to the team:
“Enzo acknowledged he did wrong and quickly put his hands up to the club, team, and people he offended.”
“As soon as he arrives, we’ll discuss. But yes, I spoke to Enzo and all the other guys. I hope we can all be on the same page, move on, and focus on our season together.”
