Prince Ayo Fayose Raises Alarm Over Alleged Arrest of Ekiti Critics

—

After social media pundit Prince Ayo Fayose claimed hundreds of people were detained for speaking out against the state administration, new worries have emerged in Ekiti State.

The News Chronicle reports that Fayose said in a video posted on social media that more than 500 Ekiti residents had been arrested using what he called “Form K”, supposedly for expressing opposing opinions about the government. He wondered whether such behavior aligned with democratic values and called for greater awareness of the circumstances.

Describing the change as concerning for democratic government, Fayose further claimed another state political leader had lately been incarcerated under similar conditions. He said that people should be free to voice their views without fear of arrest or harassment.

The commentator urged Nigerians and people around the world to pay attention to the charges, since freedom of speech remains a fundamental pillar of democracy.

Online reactions to his statements have since fueled debates among supporters and opponents on the allegations and their consequences for civil liberties in the state. The Ekiti State Government had not officially addressed the claims presented in the video at the time of this report’s submission.

The uproar has only served to stimulate debates on political freedom, people’s rights, and the preservation of democratic ideals in Nigeria.
