President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recently inaugurated the M18 road infrastructure in the Guzape District of Abuja, naming it in honor of the late Professor Chinua Achebe, on Saturday.
Achebe was a distinguished Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic who passed away in 2013. He is best known for his groundbreaking novel, “Things Fall Apart,” published in 1958.
This novel remains the most widely studied, translated, and read African novel to this day. Achebe’s “African Trilogy” also includes “No Longer at Ease” (1960) and “Arrow of God” (1964), both of which have had significant impacts on African literature.
The inauguration ceremony was captured in a video shared by Dada Olusegun, the special adviser to the president on social media.
This act of naming the M18 road after Achebe is a part of a series of developments initiated by President Tinubu in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to commemorate his first year in office.
This gesture follows President Tinubu’s recent decision to name the Northern Parkway road in Abuja after another Nigerian literary giant, Wole Soyinka.
By honoring these literary figures, the president is acknowledging their immense contributions to Nigerian and African literature.
The commissioning of various projects in Abuja is seen as a significant part of the president’s efforts to develop the FCT and leave a lasting legacy.
Naming roads after such prominent figures not only honors their memory but also aims to inspire future generations to appreciate and contribute to Nigerian literature and culture.
