Portugal Coach Backs Cristiano Ronaldo Ahead of Crucial World Cup Clash

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has thrown his full support behind captain Cristiano Ronaldo as the national team prepares for a decisive World Cup group stage encounter against Uzbekistan.

Martinez dismissed complaints regarding the veteran forward following Portugal’s subpar 1-1 draw with DR Congo, stressing the player still is a vital player both on and off the pitch, The News Chronicle reports.

The Portuguese coach said the 41-year-old was an outstanding leader whose knowledge and impact still help the team, therefore addressing rising questions about Ronaldo’s starting lineup position. Martinez also dismissed claims of instability inside the camp, underlining the unity of the team under the strain that resulted from their early outcome.

The manager insisted Ronaldo’s movement, work ethic, and general contribution support his position in the team even as the forward looks for his first tournament goal. Fellow Portugal star Joao Cancelo also admitted the club fell short in creating enough opportunities in their first game and so highlighted the need of development.

Portugal now go into their encounter with Uzbekistan aware that they need to win to improve their chances of making it to the knockout stage. Martinez is depending on his seasoned captain to get the squad back on track since expectations are great.
