The Plateau State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to using science, technology, and innovation to address security challenges and promote socioeconomic growth.
Speaking at a press conference in Jos on Monday to mark the 2025 World Science Day for Peace and Development, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Cletus Bako, highlighted the vital role of science in promoting peace, sustainable development, and improving living standards.
Dr. Bako said the event supports key Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s vision of achieving lasting peace and progress in the state.
“Beyond providing technical solutions, science creates opportunities for international cooperation,” he stated. “This event allows us to reflect on the kind of science and relationship with society that will help us meet the demands of the future.”
He also announced plans for the upcoming Plateau State Festival of Innovation, Science, and Technology, which will showcase local innovations and promote collaboration among stakeholders.
According to him, “Science is key to addressing global challenges such as climate change, health crises, and technological inequality. It contributes to peace-building by providing practical and sustainable solutions.”
This year’s World Science Day theme, “Trust, Transformation, and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050,” encourages global reflection on how science can shape a safer, fairer, and more sustainable world.
The event in Plateau State featured lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, quizzes, and guidance sessions on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), emphasizing science’s central role in building peace and driving development.
