The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong disapproval of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s leadership, asserting that his governance is steering the state perilously toward chaos.

The party has raised concerns regarding the suitability of Catholic priests occupying political roles, casting doubt on the appropriateness of Governor Alia’s involvement in both spheres.

In their critique, the PDP contends that Governor Alia’s actions and decisions have contributed to an environment of instability within Benue State.

They argue that his leadership style has engendered concerns about the overall welfare and harmony of the state, thus prompting the party to voice its reservations about the trajectory under his administration.

Furthermore, the PDP has specifically questioned the compatibility of Catholic priests assuming political positions.

This critique suggests a broader debate about the intersection of religious affiliations and political roles.

The party implies that Governor Alia’s dual role as a political figure and a member of the clergy might be conflicting, raising doubts about the efficacy of such a combination in the governance of the state.

This criticism underscores the nuanced perspectives within the political landscape, delving into the intricacies of the governor’s leadership style and the perceived challenges arising from his religious background.

The PDP’s statement reflects a broader discourse on the role of individuals with religious affiliations in political spheres, bringing attention to the potential implications for governance and public perception.

In a statement released by the party’s spokesperson, Bemgba Iortyom, the indefinite suspension of Terdoo Kenti, the Chairman of Kwande Local Government Area (LGA), and other members of his Executive Committee by the All Progressives Congress (APC) was condemned as an “aberration.”

Mr. Iortyom characterized this move as a clear example of Governor Alia’s “disregard for democratic principles and ineffective leadership.” He dismissed the suspension as having “no consequence,” already deemed “objectionable,” and even rejected by the state chapter of the APC itself.

Going further, the PDP spokesperson alleged that Mr. Kenti’s suspension is part of a broader trend of “dictatorial tendencies” exhibited by Governor Alia, with the aim of “undermining constitutional order” in the state.

Mr. Iortyom expressed the party’s observation that the suspension order by Revd. Fr. Hule in Kwande, while surprising, mirrors the lawless approach of the governor in Makurdi.

He regretfully noted that such actions contribute to the growing perception that Catholic priests, due to their command and authoritarian orientation, may be unsuitable for political leadership within our liberal democratic system.
