PDP Crisis: CNPP Slams ‘Weaponisation’ of Police in Political Conflicts

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has condemned what it described as the growing use of the Nigeria Police Force to settle political disputes, citing the recent confrontation at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement issued to The News Chronicle, the CNPP urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to halt the trend and ensure that the police are not “weaponised for political advantage.”

The group said the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has a constitutional obligation to guarantee the neutrality and professionalism of security agencies, warning that anything short of this could undermine public trust and threaten the country’s democratic system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The CNPP also cautioned politicians within the PDP against actions capable of destabilising the country or dragging public institutions into partisan conflicts.

“Internal disagreements must be resolved through established party mechanisms, not through crude displays of force or state-backed intimidation. No political actor has the right to drag public institutions into partisan conflicts,” the group said.

They further urged all political organisations to operate strictly within their constitutions and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, stressing that adherence to due process and internal democracy is vital to strengthening the nation’s political system.

The CNPP reaffirmed its commitment to defending democracy and ensuring peaceful and lawful political competition.
