Parents Arrested After Allegedly Dumping Infant Twins in Drainage to Die in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command says it has recovered the bodies of two infant twins allegedly abandoned in a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Awka.

Ikenga said police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters recovered the lifeless infants following a tip-off from members of the public.

According to him, the bodies were discovered in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko, in the early hours of Sunday.

“Following the report, operatives immediately swung into action, secured the scene, gathered vital evidence and commenced investigations.

“Preliminary investigation led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants.

”They are currently in police custody and assisting investigators in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” he said.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as a disturbing act and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.

He said the commissioner condemned the act and reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.

The police spokesperson added that Orutugu commended the operatives for their swift response.

According to him, their diligent investigative efforts led to the arrest of the suspects shortly after the incident was reported.

He quoted the commissioner as saying that every child deserved protection, care and the opportunity to live.

Ikenga said investigations into the matter were ongoing and that further developments would be communicated in due course.
