Mo Salah Shines as Egypt Beat New Zealand in World Cup 2026 Opener

In a tightly contested Group G encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mohamed Salah delivered a masterclass to fire Egypt to a 2-1 victory over New Zealand on Monday.

The Liverpool superstar opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a trademark curling finish from the edge of the box, sending the Egyptian fans into raptures. He then turned provider just after halftime, delivering a pinpoint cross that Omar Marmoush headed home to make it 2-0.

New Zealand pulled one back late through a spirited counter, but Egypt held firm to claim all three points. Salah’s goal and assist took his international tally to 62, underlining why he remains Africa’s premier talent at 34.

The win gives Egypt an ideal start in a competitive group, with Salah once again proving his clutch pedigree on the biggest stage.
