Our Opponents Are Waiting For Us To Be Against Each Other- Tinubu Urges Unity as APC Primaries Begin

President Bola Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, sportsmanship, and internal democracy as the ruling party begins its 2026 primary elections ahead of the next general polls.

In a message to party faithful on Thursday, Tinubu described the primaries as a defining moment for the APC, stressing that the exercise goes beyond selecting candidates and serves as a referendum on the party’s unity, resilience, and strength.

The President noted that the APC, founded on the ideals of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice, and selflessness, has continued to emerge stronger after every election cycle because of the commitment of its members. He urged party leaders and aspirants to preserve that spirit as the primaries commence.

Tinubu welcomed ongoing efforts by party stakeholders to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, saying the move would reduce rancour and strengthen cohesion within the party. He, however, stressed that where consensus fails, members must approach the primaries peacefully and with a sense of brotherhood.

“Every contest will produce winners and losers,” the President said, urging victors not to gloat and those who lose to show sportsmanship and remain committed to the party. He warned against divisive politics, insisting that APC members must not give opponents the satisfaction of seeing the party fractured by internal disputes.

The President also called on governors, party leaders, and officials overseeing the primaries to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants. According to him, even those who do not emerge victorious should leave the process convinced that the contest was transparent and credible.

Tinubu further appealed for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s political process, describing them as critical demographics that must not be sidelined.

On security, the President directed the Police and other agencies to remain professional and restrict their roles strictly to maintaining peace and order during the exercise.

He wished all aspirants success in the primaries and expressed optimism that the party would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the general elections.

The APC primaries are expected to begin with the House of Representatives contests and culminate in the party’s presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026.
