OpenAI has announced major leadership changes as chief research officer Bob McGrew and research vice president Barret Zoph have departed the company.
This follows the recent exit of chief technology officer Mira Murati.
CEO Sam Altman clarified that these resignations were independent and amicable, albeit timed to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.
In light of these changes, OpenAI has made several notable promotions. Mark Chen has been elevated to senior vice president of research, while Jakub Pachocki assumes the role of chief scientist.
Additionally, Matt Knight has been appointed chief information security officer. Kevin Weil and Srinivas Narayanan will continue to lead the applied team, and Josh Achiam has been named head of mission alignment.
Altman is set to focus more on the technical and product sides of the organization.
He reassured staff that leadership transitions are common in rapidly growing companies, despite the abrupt nature of these recent departures.
The reasons behind McGrew and Zoph’s exits appear personal; McGrew expressed a need for a break, whereas Zoph is looking to explore new opportunities.
Their departures come amidst speculation regarding OpenAI’s potential shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity, coinciding with a reported new funding round that values the company at $150 billion.
This trend of high-level departures at OpenAI is noteworthy, as it adds McGrew, Zoph, and Murati to a list that includes other prominent figures like Andrej Karpathy and Greg Brockman. Currently, only three of the original 13 founders remain, underscoring the significant turnover in leadership.
Reflecting on the current landscape, Altman acknowledged the complexities of leading OpenAI, recognizing both the privilege and the relentless demands that come with such a role.
