OpenAI Establishes New Safety, Security Committee Amid Rising AI Concerns

OpenAI has announced the formation of a dedicated Safety and Security Committee, a strategic move by the board to scrutinize and fortify the organization’s operational safeguards.
This initiative is set against a backdrop of global apprehensions about the rapid development of powerful AI models.
The newly formed committee is tasked with developing robust processes and implementing safeguards within the next 90 days.
This committee’s creation underscores OpenAI’s commitment to addressing safety and security in the context of AI advancements.
The committee will be led by Bret Taylor, serving as Chair, with board members Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman, and CEO Sam Altman.
It also comprises a team of technical and policy experts, including Aleksander Madry, Lilian Weng, John Schulman, Matt Knight, and Jakub Pachocki.
To enhance their efforts, they will consult with former cybersecurity officials Rob Joyce and John Carlin.
The establishment of the committee follows growing global concerns about the safety implications of increasingly powerful AI models.
This move is part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to manage the potential risks associated with these technological advancements, particularly in light of the recent training of a new, more powerful AI model.
Over the next 90 days, the committee will work on developing recommendations which will be presented to the full board.
OpenAI has committed to publicly updating on the recommendations that are adopted, ensuring transparency in their efforts to prioritize safety and security.
The new committee’s formation comes after the recent dissolution of a previous team focused on ultra-capable AI systems, following the departure of key leaders, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike.
This reorganization reflects OpenAI’s ongoing adaptation to the evolving challenges in the AI landscape.
