President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi over his call for increased Federal Government investment in Nigeria’s sports sector.
Onanuga made the remarks in a post on X while reacting to Obi’s recent comments on the state of sports development in the country.
Obi had called for greater investment in sports, arguing that the sector could contribute to youth development, employment generation and social transformation.
Reacting, Onanuga accused the former Anambra State governor of making what he described as false claims about the Federal Government’s investment in sports.
“Headlines don’t lie like Peter Obi lies, recklessly,” Onanuga wrote.
He also questioned Obi’s record on sports during his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State, alleging that sportsmen and women in the state were poorly treated.
“His poor sports record as governor is well documented in the archives,” he said.
Onanuga further alleged that physically challenged athletes in Anambra State were also treated “shabbily” during Obi’s tenure.

He therefore questioned Obi’s call for increased Federal Government investment in sports, citing what he described as the former governor’s record in Anambra.
“Today, he talks, very glibly, of course, about the need for the FG to invest in sport, when, as governor for eight years, he treated Anambra sportsmen and women and even, unconscionably, the physically challenged sportsmen and women shabbily,” he wrote.
Obi’s comments followed his attendance at a Nigeria Premier Football League match in Lagos, where he expressed concern over the poor development and patronage of sports in Nigeria.
