Former world champion Lawrence Okolie has suggested that Jake Paul could spring a surprise when he steps into the ring with former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, citing the American’s rapid improvement and discipline in training.
Okolie, who spent time sparring with Paul during a recent camp, said he was taken aback by the YouTuber turned boxer’s ability to adapt and compete at a high level. He noted that the preparation involved elite-level sparring partners and intensity comparable to a world title camp, adding that Paul handled the demands better than expected.
Okolie’s assessment is based on extended time in camp, where Paul reportedly showed steady progress, resilience, and a growing tactical awareness. According to the heavyweight, Paul was difficult to dominate in sparring and consistently responded with movement and counter punches.
While acknowledging Joshua’s pedigree as a former Olympic champion and two time unified heavyweight title holder, Okolie said the early rounds could be decisive if Paul approaches the contest with the same confidence and structure he showed in training. He added that Paul’s ring intelligence and willingness to learn could unsettle expectations.
Okolie also cautioned that fight night conditions differ from gym sessions, with emotions, pressure, and atmosphere playing a major role. Still, he believes the matchup may be more competitive than many anticipate.
The British heavyweight is preparing for his own bout in Lagos and remains focused on future title ambitions as he continues his push in the heavyweight division.
