The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has said the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, is committed to transforming Nigeria’s economy to ensure that education translates into meaningful employment and better livelihoods.
In an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, monitored by The News Chronicle, Tanko said the country’s education system should equip young people for careers that reflect their qualifications.
He argued that university graduates should not be left with limited economic opportunities after completing their education, insisting that Obi’s vision is to create an economy where qualifications are rewarded.
“You cannot reduce people who have studied at the university to akara and corn sellers.
“Peter Obi plans to turn the fortunes of Nigerians such that when you go to school, you deserve to earn according to what you have learned,” Tanko said.
According to him, Obi’s record as former governor of Anambra State demonstrates his commitment to improving education and governance.
“This man has been able to transform the educational system in his state, moving it from sixth position to number one.
“This same person has been able to secure the lives and property of his people. Who wouldn’t want that person as president?” he asked.
Tanko maintained that Nigeria’s education system should equip graduates with opportunities that reflect their skills and qualifications, rather than leaving them underemployed.
His comments followed the First Lady’s remarks about akara and roasted corn sellers, which have continued to generate reactions from political figures and members of the public.
