Burna Boy Hits #1 on Global Spotify Chart With Shakira’s “Dai Dai”

—

Burna Boy has landed his first-ever #1 on the Global Spotify Daily Top Songs Chart with “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Colombian singer Shakira.

The track, released May 15, serves as the official FIFA World Cup anthem and was co-written by Ed Sheeran and Jon Bellion.

The song pulled in 4.215 million streams to claim the top spot on July 1, replacing Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

Since the World Cup kicked off, streams of “Dai Dai” have risen 130 percent. Beyond Spotify, the track topped the Global YouTube chart, the United World chart, the Billboard Global 200 excluding the US, and the worldwide iTunes charts, according to industry tracker Pop Core.

For Burna Boy, this makes him the first African artist to top the global Spotify chart this decade, according to Hits Daily Double. Album Talks places him as the second African artist to reach the summit, after Wizkid. For Shakira, it marks her third global #1, following “TQG” with Karol G and the Bizarrap-led “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” both of which were released in 2023.

The achievement also comes days after Burna Boy broke another record. On June 30, 2026, he was reported to have reached a peak of 46.84 million monthly listeners on Spotify, the highest ever recorded by an African artist, surpassing Tyla’s previous mark of 46.58 million.

Mixed reactions on social media

Nigerian reactions to the chart-topping run have been divided. Many fans celebrated the achievement as a national win, framing it as proof of Burna Boy’s global standing regardless of his role on the track. Others pushed back, arguing that Shakira’s long history with World Cup anthems, not Burna Boy’s contribution, drove the song’s success. One user on X, @sUccessful1o2, argued that Burna Boy had minimal creative input and that the record belongs to Shakira.

That comment sparked heated exchanges between fans of different Nigerian artists, with some pointing to Davido’s own World Cup-related appearance as a point of comparison, and others defending Burna Boy’s streaming dominance over the past year.

Not everyone weighed in critically.

Shakira’s Colombia national team is preparing to face Ghana in the World Cup Round of 32 on Friday in Kansas City, with Colombia listed as heavy favorites.
