Obi Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation Over Worsening Economy, Insecurity

Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for political accountability at home following the announcement of the British Prime Minister’s planned resignation in July amid public discontent over economic stagnation, rising living costs, and unmet campaign promises.

In a statement made available to The News Chronicle, Obi said he listened to the UK leader’s resignation speech with interest, noting that it reinforced his broader reflection on governance outcomes in successful nations and the structural factors that drive progress or failure elsewhere.

Turning to Nigeria, he recalled past political rhetoric in which leaders, including the current president during opposition years, had demanded resignations over insecurity and economic hardship, particularly during the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction crisis.

He also referenced campaign commitments made during the 2023 elections, including pledges to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, and enhance citizens’ welfare, warning that leaders had previously challenged voters to hold them accountable if they failed to deliver.

Obi argued that conditions in the country have since deteriorated, citing persistent power shortages, rising insecurity—including widespread kidnappings—and deepening economic hardship. He added that challenges across infrastructure, transport, security, and anti-corruption efforts have worsened significantly.

On that basis, he called for the resignation of the President, saying it would help entrench a culture of accountability in public office, discourage impunity, and reinforce the principle that leadership is a responsibility, not a right. He stressed that such a precedent, in his view, would strengthen democratic responsibility and shape a better future for coming generations.
